Magnitude-5.5 Quake Strikes Near Imphal In Northeastern State Of Manipur

Several areas in Northeastern part of the country falls under the zone 5 of the seismic zones in India, making it prone to earthquakes.

IMPHAL: A magnitude-5.5  earthquake has struck east of Imphal, capital of India’s northeastern state of Manipur.The city has a population of around 250,000 people.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the earthquake occurred at 12:17 p.m.

There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake, which was 22.8 km deep and hit 101 km east of Imphal.The region is a bed for seismic activity due collisions of the India and Eurasia plates.

India is divided into four seismic zones, namely, zone 2, zone 3, zone 4 and zone 5. Out of these zones, zone 5 is the most prone to earthquakes whereas, zone 2 has the lowest seismic levels.

In 2016, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Manipur and adjoining areas killing eight people and damaging around 100 houses.It occurred in the Myanmar-India border region at a latitude of 24.7 N and longitude of 94.7 E, it said.
